A Totally Awkward Love Story by Tom Ellen, Lucy Ivison

3.0

If you're expecting some literary genius revolutionary love story then you're looking at the wrong book. This is a story about two people who like each other but due to poor communication and terrible timing things just don't seem to work out for them. It's one of those love stories that you just want to lock the two of them in a room and force them to open up to each other but it's also a fun read to see them flail awkwardly and make stupid mistakes.

It's those stupid mistakes and flailings that make this book seem real rather than a work of fiction. Our two protagonists Hannah and Sam have just finished their GCSE's and have the summer free before heading off to college, but with a girls holiday to the Greek islands and music festivals in Devon there's lots of opportunities for awkward teenage moments.

One thing that does set this book apart from other YA romance stories is the level of frankness the authors have. Honestly this books main focus is about having sex for the first time and the sexual encounters of their friends. Unlike a lot of YA this goes to a more in depth level, there's everything from first bikini waxes to first hand jobs to office party supply closet hook-ups to being found having sex in a strangers tent, and I think it's the realness of these awkward moments that young people should read this book for. It doesn't glamorize the situation, it tells it like it is.
