Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case by Violet Marsh

3.75

If you like bonkers histroms with silly animals and over the top plots, this is the book for you!

Miss H, aka, Miss Georgina Harrington, is a brilliant archeologist, however because she's a woman, she publishes all her findings via her gadabout cousin, Percy Pendergast. When Percy goes missing after Georgina discovers an ancient burial site on her land, she seeks the assistance of the crew at the Black Sheep and Percy's close friend, Alexander Lovett, the Marquess of Heathford, who just so happens to be the man her half-brother is trying to marry her off too!

While I really enjoyed the idea of this, it fell a bit flat. At times it was almost too bonkers for me, yet other moments were actually funny, like Alexander creating a new fad with chickens as pets. I was really invested when I started the book and read about 1/3 in one go, but the middle portion was a slog to get through. I don't know if it was the pacing or the plot going in multiple directions, but I struggled for a while. I did become invested at the end, purely for the entertainment value of Georgina, Alexander, a rooster, and a dog rushing through and stopping traffic in all of London, but it was still very outlandish and came together really rapidly and a bit out of the blue. I am interested in the next book which I believe will feature Alexander's cousin and Black Sheep proprietress, Hannah, and a certain noble gentleman we're introduced to in this book!

This book is best read after Lady Charlotte Gets Her Man, as many of the side characters, and Alexander, are first introduced in that book.
