I’m still very much enjoying my read through of this series but I had to dock this particular title a star. Cabot perfectly captures the teenage mindset throughout the series and unfortunately sometimes that grates on me as an adult reader. I was frustrated with Mia for not talking things out with Michael. I wanted to chuck Lily out a window and keep her far, far away from both Mia and Boris. But then I remembered how end-of-the-world, over the top, super duper dramatic EVERYTHING was when I was in high school, especially when it came to relationships. I can’t help but admire how well Cabot encapsulated those feelings and the horrible, destructive decisions teens make because of them.
I still kind of hate Lily, but we’ll see if that changes as I continue on.
There’s also a poorly executed tangent about Asperger’s Syndrome in there as well which felt icky. It’s very of the time that the book was written, unfortunately. It would have been interesting to have a more thoughtful look into neurodiversity within the various characters in the series, but that’s definitely not what happened.
