Before They Are Hanged
by Joe Abercrombie
From the first reading 10 years ago I vaguely remember it being boring and pretty much pointless, but rereading it now hit me really hard.
I know, The Blade Itself, the first volume, is just a big set up for the upcoming events, so it’s boring for a reason. On the other hand, I’ve read enough fantasy novels in my life to know that the introduction to a fictional world could be executed in a much more interesting, if not gripping, manner.
The problem is — these events never come in this volume. It seems that the author thought of everything (or at least he thinks he thought), but forgot about the most important ingredient in fiction — the plot. Or even worse: he thinks that a bunch of interweaving, uninteresting episodes, which are loosely connected to each other, make a plot.
No, they don’t.
I see that the author uses the “LordGrimdark” name for his Twitter account. I think “GrandpaBoring” would be a much better choice.
