Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business
by Esphyr Slobodkina
This is the story of a peddler who sells caps. The interesting thing about this peddler is that he wears all the caps he has for sale on top of his own cap. One day the peddler is not having any luck selling caps and decides to take a walk in the country. He sits down under a tree to rest, and while he is asleep monkeys take his caps, put them on, and sit on each branch of the tree above him. When he wakes up he notices that his caps are missing. He then sees the monkeys in the tree wearing his caps and he gets angry. The man makes a series of gestures which the monkeys repeat. In complete frustration the man throws his own cap to the ground. This is then mimicked by the monkeys. He then puts all of the caps back on his head and goes back to town.
I think this is a cute book with good illustrations. I like that the book ends well and things are back to normal by the end of the tale.
This book could be used for counting or as a story that the teacher wants children to illustrate. It could also be used to introduce some activity where children follow a leader, sort of like Simon says.
