Song of Kali by Dan Simmons
3.0
dark tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

The writing is solid, and it definitely excels at weaving a tense, menacing atmosphere, but all the well-done set-up goes to waste when the back half totally falls apart. Ultimately, what was the point of any of it? Also, even when trying to be charitable, it's hard not to come away with the impression that, at best, the author had a really bad experience in Calcutta or, at worst, he is just plain racist.
