All the elements of a great fantasy series were there, but the execution felt a little off. I listened to the audiobook and I think that may have been a mistake in this instance. While I thought the voice actor did a terrific job voicing the female main character, she just could not do the male MC justice. He was frequently described as growling words or speaking in a low register and it just didn’t come across the way I felt the author intended. The book started off strong, but the middle was uneventful and the ending was a cliffhanger which I found kind of annoying after waiting so long for something interesting to happen. I would probably read book two, but I don’t really feel that invested.
