This was my read the world selection for Argentina.
This book is quite difficult to review - I kind of liked it, yet I didn't like it. Not only was it difficult to review, it was also difficult to read. Whilst the writing was masterful, I did not find it immersive and I was constantly reminded that I was reading a book, as opposed to be swept away by it.
This book can be read in two ways. You can read it the usual way you read a book (!!), or you can 'hopscotch' around the chapters in an order outlined at the beginning of the book. I chose to read it the latter way, however I don't really think that added to the story in any way and in some ways was a little jarring, as it deviated off the main storyline into various snippets of other topics which were sometimes not even remotely related.
Rating this book is also difficult! As I already mentioned, the language is great and having read the English translation, I can only imagine how wonderful it must read in Spanish. However I procrastinated with this book so much - I had to force myself to read it and when I did, it was ok. There is not much of a storyline, which is fine, however when a book has very little storyline, I want the characters to be amazing and to me they just weren't. I didn't find any of them particularly interesting and wasn't invested in any of them.
So it's 2 stars from me, which is clearly an unpopular opinion but I can't get past the fact that I just wasn't that interested in picking this book up each day to read, no matter how clever the writing was.
