This book has a very slow pace. Don't believe me? Storygraph's summary states "When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts". So this is the plot, yes? Then the plot does not begin to unspool until 36% of the book had already passed. That's 4 hours into the audiobook. This book really felt like one good debate sitting in a sea of uninteresting familial "drama" (even calling it so seems hyperbolic). Though, undoubtedly, someone who cares more for meditative works and thorough descriptive writing would appreciate this book for more than I can.
