Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie
3.0

Good value Christie from just before her Imperial phase. Poirot is still a likeable figure at this point and she has dispensed with the services of the unnecessary and often irritating Captain Hastings. There's enough mystery here - elderly, unlikeable society moneylender dies on plane, is it a wasp sting or a poison dart - and a genuinely unexpected ending. Though a tad far fetched in exposition it stands up well enough and the clues have been liberally dispensed and discussed throughout so no one could say it's unfair. Jane Grey is an unlikely Christie heroine - a working class character who's neither moronic nor a figure of fun, although sadly the racism creeps in even with someone likeable. That aside it's a fun read for a long plane journey.
