A Witch and Her Dragon
by Emberly Wyndham
A Witch and Her Dragon is a cozy, romantasy with spice. And, who doesn't want a dragon for their very own?
I adored this book! It has that perfect slow burn spice that teases you and makes you want more. The FMC Alina Ravenscroft is the princess who is attending Coven Crest Academy. Her grandfather, the King, agrees that she can attend, but she will have a bodyguard with her at all times. Sir Raelan Ashvale is the knight that King Ravenscroft chooses to protect Alina while she is at academy. The King is fully aware that Raelan is a dragon shifter, but has no idea that Alina is Raelan's fated mate, and that being so close to her is going to torture his dragon as the dragon desires nothing more than to claim Alina.
I am a fan of any witchy academy type story, and while this story doesn't focus so much on the academia aspect, that is ok because the angst between Alina and Raelan is enough to make you not want to put this book down. Poor Raelan is literally fighting his dragons urge to claim Alina every second of being within her presence. Initially Alina thinks Raelan must not like her, because he is always grumpy and short with her and doesn't seem to want to be around her. But then all of a sudden when some boys talk to her, Raelan steps in and basically scares them off. Alina starts wonder how Raelan really feels about her.
I truly delighted in the way the author wrote this story, this has the exact kind of slow burn spice I enjoy, where the main characters get just a taste of each other, and then back off, time and again. I felt for Raelan and all he was dealing with, wanting Alina, not wanting to cross that line with her because it could jeopardize his family and their living situation, but also giving in just a little because he could not contain himself, while also literally being burned by the magic that kept his dragon at bay.
I loved Alina's roommates, Poppy, Lyra, and Maeve. They all play a small part in the story that contributes to the whole. Juniper, Lyra's spirit companion rat, is particularly amusing, as Lyra takes Juniper everywhere and feeds her little snacks. I would have loved to read more about Yuki, Alina's arctic fox spirit companion, but Juniper had more direct parts in the story. I am hoping maybe the next books in the series may focus on one of the room mates, but we shall see!
Some Fav Quotes:
"...makes me want to crush my mouth to hers, to run my tongue along her lips until they're no longer twisted into such an angry scowl. I want it so badly that I flinch from the desire singing through my veins."
"Mine, my dragon growls. Not his. Mine."
"She takes one more step toward me, presses onto her toes, and brushes her lips against mine. And I f***ing lose it."
"My body yearns for her, my blood burns for her. She's mine. Mine. Mine"
"But no matter how many times I remind myself that I can't have her, my dragon refuses to acquiesce. And I realize that as long as I'm in her vicinity, this battle will never end. Yet I'd rather spend my whole life fighting than to be parted from her."
"Despite having seen me in my true form, despite knowing what I am, she stares back at me fearlessly, meeting me glare for glare. F***, I want her."
"What she does not know is that I'm not the anchor-I'm the storm."
"He's still in my mouth, yet I'm already thinking of doing it again, am already yearning for more. What has he done to me?"
""Once I claim you, there's no going back. We mate for life. It...It'll change everything." "Claim me. I want to be yours.""
"She is the only thing I truly needed. I've needed her all along. To calm me. To control me. To own me."
"She's the frost to my fire, the earth to my sky. She's my mate. And destiny got it right."
"He's my dragon, my mate."
Thank you so much to the author for a copy of this book!
