arcuysnn 's review for:
Half a War
by Joe Abercrombie
It took three tries, but I finally finished it out of stubbornness. Half a War takes most of Abercrombie's cleverness and strong sense of place and replaces them with tired and often cringe worthy YA tropes. Half a King is worth reading at least, but there's little surprising or even interesting in the subsequent books.
Maybe I'm just sick of fantasy worlds that are actually post-apocalyptic Earths, but the setting annoyed me more than engaged me. There's little consideration of the impact of any of the characters' actions. Characters die and are mourned as minimally as I would if I attended their funerals. In the end nothing seemed to matter, and while that works as a thematic choice on Abercrombie's part, I'm left wondering why any of this is here in the first place. The destination is unsatisfying, and the journey to get there is frustrating.
I've enjoyed everything else Abercrombie has ever written, but this series just wasn't for me.
