Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
5.0
I absolutely LOVE reading about despicable characters. I will never be (or understand) those people who give a book a one star rating simply because the characters were unlikable. For me personally, the more twisted, broken or morally corrupt a character, the more interesting they become to me. After three books, I can safely say that Gillian Flynn know's exactly what I like.
I was warned before reading this book, about the slow first half...and while yes, nothing too dramatic happens, I can't say I was ever bored during it. The first half of this book is all about getting the pieces in place, and showing the reader everything they need to know for the explosive second half.
I was also warned about the predictability of the 'twist', but I'm not sure it was ever really intended to be a 'twist'. Anyone who has read the first half of the book, will see the turn of the novel coming as Flynn has given you all the information you need to have worked it out well before it happens. If anything I was awaiting the twist with anticipation, to see Flynn really cut loose. If anything the second half of the novel is so successful, simply because of the slow, information laden first half. It was also a book that I really struggled to simply put down. It's not a short book by any means, and I pretty much read it in two sittings, as I awaited another turn in the story or for another certain bit of information to come out. After reading it, I'm definitely not surprised by it's success, and cannot wait for Flynn's next book. I'm just hoping it's as fucked up as her first three.
Overall, I would rate this as the second best of Flynn's work, between Dark Places and Sharp Objects, with Dark Places being the clear number one for me.
