Book 147: Check, Please! Book 1 # Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu

One of those graphic novels on a list of good YA graphic novels. One of those lists where I ordered every book I could get on hold at the library. The book was published after a run of the comic online. I will say it here and again later that this is not a graphic novel for kids!

The story of Eric Bittle, who is beginning his college career as a hockey player, vlogger, and baker. Eric is terrified to be checked during a game, though he is a very good hockey player. The art in the book is great, it is easy to read, I am going to need to read the second book as well. There are a lot of facets to this book that make sure this book is not for kids. The guys except the freshman live in a frat house environment (yes, sex, drinking, etc), there is lots of swearing, complicated relationships, so many things going on all at once.

The graphic novel is good, I definitely enjoyed it. The feel of it especially looking at the cover and a quick flip through the pages, you would think the story would be more juvenile, but not even close. My rating 4 ⭐️
