The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling

4.0

The Death of Jane Lawrence was a wild ride, to say the least. It's unlike anything I've read before. I loved the Victorian setting, and I could definitely see the inspiration from Crimson Peak (which I loved as well). I was expecting this to be a gothic tale with a little bit of horror, but instead I got a gothic tale with
medical gore, a haunted house, dark magic, scary ghost-type things, a romance that seemed it would end in disaster, and a decent amount of cocaine. I loved Jane and although I don't typically enjoy romances where the characters fall in love so fast, I did enjoy reading about her and Augustine's relationship. At the 3/4 mark I started to get a little confused, with all the dark magic and rituals Jane was going through, but I'm glad I stuck with it. This story is a great allegory for how a relationship can bring out the worst in someone and they can then be born anew.
