I really enjoyed Cutter's The Troop & The Deep, unfortunately this one did not land for me.  We did get Cutter's style of gory body horror.  Unfortunately the characters felt flat, there was no growth or depth to make them interesting.  Also I was confused on the timeline jumping back and forth from 1965 to 1980 in the beginning.  

The villain was also really one dimensional.  A crazy religious cult in the New Mexico forest should be a wild time to read about, but again it didn't work for me.
