For me this book is 5 star as I've enjoyed it since my first read of it years ago and it's a book I keep coming back to.
The main character is indeed what many would think of as a pick me type but to me her character makes perfect sense in her world. This is world full of armies and nobles, kings and queens. The women for the most part are expected to be raised and live under traditional values. Sage was raised outside of this influence by a father who taught her different values. She did not have experience with trad life and feminine hobbies.
She is not meant to be perfect and I feel she develops appropriately throughout the book.

Long rant aside, I enjoy her as a main character and getting to see other perspectives throughout the book with this third person writing style. It may not be a style suited to everyone but I felt the author pulled it off well. The romance although potentially a bit rushed does have a leg to stand on and really pulls you along in the gripping moments.

The main plot twist of the book definitely went over my head the first time so it made an interesting reread to see where I missed all the hints. The matchmaking aspect while a motivation to move the plot along is not a huge focus overall. If you're looking at this for that aspect you may find it lacking.

If you enjoy a strong female lead, action and mystery mixed with romance then this may be just the book for you.
