The Troop by Nick Cutter

4.0

I’ve had to think on this.

This book gets a lot of hype. But imo it’s not inherently scary. You know pretty much right away what the threat is in this book, it’s not an unknown monster hiding in the shadows. It is a bit gross if you have a weak stomach but it wasn’t anything that stopped me reading it. I’m still thinking about this book after finishing it, and I feel sad more than anything. This book is sad. These boys are abandoned on this island with a contagious parasite and the real fear is that this is not unrealistic. I can totally imagine this happening. I felt so sad for Max and Newton, I rooted for them until the very end. The other boys more seemed cliched and there to fit into certain stereotypes. And while Dr Tim was nice enough, I gotta be honest, as a medical professional I would not jeopardize the health and safety of kids in my care to help a stranger in the shape our typhoid Tom character is in. All in all I still thought this was a good book, although not to the level of the hype it gets imo. The animal abuse is disturbing and I’m not one super bothered by that usually but the turtle scene made me so sad, not only for the turtle but so much for the boys. I would probably rate it 3.5 stars.
