The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

This is a book that absolutely lives up to the hype and more. Even though the story is set in a world of epic mythology and all powerful gods and legendary wars, all of that is really secondary to the humanity of Patroclus and Achilles, their growth from boys to men, their relationship both to each other and to themselves. Lovers of Greek mythology will appreciate the small references and reframed stories, but at the same time someone who couldn’t even name a single Greek god would be able to understand and appreciate the rich setting that the author has created. Madeline Miller has this way of writing that somehow manages to be so simple and yet so beautiful at the same time, and not a single sentence is wasted. Truly a modern classic.
