The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family by Ibtihaj Muhammad

5.0

The Proudest Blue is about two sisters named Asiya and Faizah. The story is about Asiya's first day of wearing a hijab and the strength and beauty it brings. Some question Asiya and Faizah about her hijab, but their mother prepared them for the questions, hurtful comments, and stares. Faizah describes her older sister's hijab as the kind of blue that is the ocean and sky meeting. It is beautiful and loud, and Faizah wants to wear one just like it. I would have this in my classroom as a reminder to all of my students that everyone is different, and that is beautiful. Some cultures celebrate differently or have different traditions, but that is what makes them unique.
