The Shuddering
by Ania Ahlborn
Took a while to decide how I felt about this book - it was a lot of ups and downs between enjoying it and being bored with it. 2.75 stars.
I thought it was quite a slow start, I was about 25% through before I even felt committed to reading it, and about 55% through before I felt like anything was really happening. There was quite a lot of unnecessary bits that added nothing to the story, and no character development. It was all just a bit choppy, with frustrating characters that made stupid decisions.
The casual misogyny of having your female character in the kitchen worrying about feeding everyone while the guys make a plan because of her “maternal instincts” was off putting even if it was just for a second.
A good start to an idea that just wasn’t executed well. Didn’t hate it, but wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
