Well, That Was Unexpected
by Jesse Q. Sutanto
Sharlot (yes, that’s the correct spelling) wants to go all the way and arranges to have a night alone with her boyfriend Bradley, her mama none the wiser. Unfortunately for her and Bradley, mum returns home sooner than expected and walks in on them. Yeah. We all know what that ends.
And what’s a Indonesian mother to do but to whisk her daughter away from LA and into Indonesia, in hopes of her daughter not to have sex at the young age of 17.
George is at home, doing what boys do and watching porn. But when his father and little sister walk in on him, he panics and minimizes the porn browser window only to reveal … a game with badgers? Oops, now Papa is convinced George is tapping it to the badger beat. So clearly the solution is to find a wholesome girlfriend for George.
Enter … catfishing parents! Mix in an awkward date where Sharlot and George both do not want to be in. Sprinkle some paparazzi action on top of it and you have the funniest fake-dating YA story out there.
This was so good and so funny! The characters are wonderful and I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard than when reading Mama and Papa trying to be hip and cool kids over texting. Omg. The secondhand embarrassment was the best ever!
Sharlot and George had a lot of good revelations within the book and I adored watching them grow. Sharlot was very ignorant towards her roots and Indonesia and general and seeing her eyes opened was so good. George grew within his family and learned it was okay to take your place among them where he felt comfortable to do so. And the moment where he gently stood up to his grandmother was one of my favorite moments!
A truly lovely and wonderful read, light and fluffy and perfectly YA ❤️
