Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
4.0
This turned out to be good for lots of discussion for my YA book club and some people were very passionate about how it "should" have ended.
When I started the book I forgot that we normally pick a "romance" type book for Feb and was too busy cracking up during the first half for it to even dawn on me. I liked the scene when Evie & are mom are silently arguing back & forth and she mentions that this must be what it's like to see 2 mimes fighting.
I loved Fifi (aka Fire Cracker Woman) and could totally see her in my head when she took the bell out of the drawer, put it back on the counter and said "I hate you". I also may have lost it when X's gram says "Fiona, be a dear, don't undress my grandson with your eyes" and she responds "You prefer I should use my hands?" (Laughed so hard I cried!).
I did like Fifi basically thrusting Evie & X together and having them go learn about each other. It is true that if you don't know or even like a partner that you are being paired with to do something physical, it can be seen and felt from the outside. While I'm not a musician, when they were on the star/bus tour and were going around all these venues that X was getting googly eyes for and they passed The Whiskey (aka Whiskey A Go Go) I did have a few "sigh" moments as I have been there.
Towards the end of the book when graduation is coming up, she mentions that the Seniors are having nostalgia bombs & regret grenades and I've never thought of it that way, but it's totally true! I also really liked all the cheese metaphors during the Valedictorian speech!
I'm not going to review the Meat & Potatoes of the story as there are too many things that would be spoilers, but I do think that she (or her mom) should have told her sister why Evie was so angry at their dad.
