It was refreshing to read about a world where people can shapeshift into creatures and invoke magic from the gods. However, you do not need to read the first book to enjoy this prequel of sorts although something strongly tells me a character in the Of Fire And Stars series might be a descendent of the antagonist in this book (but this is just a hunch)

Pacing is okay. I loved the magic in here, especially the Manifest and blood magic. Just wished we had more magic from Asra who is supposed to be the strongest demigod around but all she does is just act as an amplifier for other people's magic. That kind of let me down. Other than that, no problematic depictions of people of colour or bisexual people so I guess that's good enough for me.
