This book had potential, and I like a lot of the elements in it, but everything that I liked about it I could think of other books I've read that have done it better. For a Rapunzel retelling, it takes way to long to get to the Rapunzel of it all. And normally I wouldn't mind that too much for an origin story like this, but I saw where it was going from very early on, so I was just bored waiting for it to get there. It really should have been a novella, and then the pacing wouldn't have dragged so much.
Plus, the framing device was so entirely pointless. I'd just abruptly remember that this was a story an historian was reading and start wondering why all over again.
