Evernight by Claudia Gray

I really liked this book the first time I read it. I didn't mind the "twist", and I thought it was an interesting and different vampire concept. For all of the comparisons to Twilight, I thought that this series was far superior. Bianca is not quite as dense and silly as Bella is, and unlike Bella is capable of keeping it together without Lucas being omnipresent. It is the slightly Bella-esque qualities that made me not like the book quite as much upon rereading. I sincerely doubt Romeo and Juliet would have worked in the long-term, and that makes the romance between Lucas and Bianca less believable to me. However, their characters are more deep than those of Edward and Bella, and there is actually a plot (omg!). I also wonder if Claudia Gray selected the names of the characters on purpose - Bianca meaning "white, pure" and Lucas meaning "light, bright" (it could alternatively mean wolf and has been used in werewolf tales for that reason, but I am pretty sure that's not the case here). Both of those names seem pretty symbolic.
