Fight
by Sloane St. James
Prescott, aka Scottie, is a recent transplant to Sky Ridge after getting a job there as an EMT. While having a celebratory drink at the local pub, she meets Callahan, a member of the Sky Ridge Hotshots wildfire team. There is an instant spark, and when they cross paths while out on assignment, those sparks ignite, but due to some miscommunication about Scottie's past, Callahan walks away from her and their connection... that is until a situation forces them to spend time together.
This was my first book by this author, and overall I liked it. I'm not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope, and although on the whole this followed the same "omg just have a conversation" path that a lot of miscommunication books do, it was at least done in a slightly different and more interesting way, given Scottie's past. Given the potential plot that could've come from a book with two main characters who have the backstories these two do, Scottie especially, this was way more spice-focused than plot/emotion-focused. The connection between them was physical, and when the "I love you" declarations happened, I was left wondering how and why.
Overall, this was a decent and quick read with some good banter between the characters and good spice. It is book 1 in an interconnected standalone multi-author series, so I will definitely be picking up book 2 at some point to see what that author does with this world and characters.🌶🌶.5
"A tear leaks from my eye. That's not unusual when one is sleepy, but this one is accom- panied by an ache inside my ribs and a lump in my throat. It's something I never thought I would feel again, at least not with Callahan Woods. He'll never be mine... so why does he hold me like I'm his?"
"It's strange how you can have vour heart locked up for years, then out of nowhere the right person comes along and it's like they know the exact combination to open up everything about you and make you want something more."
"Of all the women to bring me to my knees, figures it's the one who comes with the most baggage, but hey, at least we have a matching set."
