I’ve really enjoyed a lot of Roxane Gay’s writing but this one wasn’t my favorite. I can’t totally fault it for being a little dated, but every reference to Bill Cosby made me cringe and there are definitely essays that just don’t hold up anymore. I also just felt some of them lacked a little nuance and were making a statement that I didn’t necessarily think held up. Some essays were really impactful but on the whole I don’t think I’d go back to any of them right away.
