The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean
4.0

Wow! This book my goodness. It was a slower start and I was a little craaaankkkyy, with some of the topics at hand. However the author wrote this beautifully and I loved the story it told. It’s a dark fairytale set in a dystopian world, where daughters are rare and raised as princesses but only valued for their ability to have children and sons are expendable. You have a mix of book eaters those who consume and gain knowledge from eating books, mind eaters whom are ravenous and must consume brains of people in order to sate that hunger, and of course humans.

I really enjoyed the way this book highlighted how strong a mother’s bond can be and how much they are willing to sacrifice to give their children a chance at a better life. I can’t imagine how it would have felt to not only be forced into bearing children for “husbands” who see you as a transaction more than a human, but also to be queer whilst being forced to have relations with the opposite sex despite being gay. This book both shows you how everyone has potential to be a villain, a monster all in their own way, whilst also highlighting the importance of allowing yourself to grow, to form alliances in order to survive and just how strong a mother’s love can truly be. I loved following Devon and her story of how she came to be a woman on the run with her 5 year old son Cai. I loved the world building, the descriptions of both the characters and the settings of each place and the storyline both past and present. It was gripping and kept my attention the whole way throughout.
