Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me
by Mariko Tamaki
Loved the illustrations and style, but the plot sort of dragged for me. Freddy was frustratingly passive, and Laura Dean was so clearly a horrible person. I just couldn’t relate or believe in the characters and plot because it just seemed so obvious from the very start what Freddy should have done. But I can see the value that this book might bring to a teenage, high school reader.
What did I like - the quirkiness of the characters, especially the hobby that Doodle and Freddy shared of disassembling and reassembling body parts of toys. Themes of friendship. I also really liked the names in this book. Very memorable.
What I didn’t like - Freddy making dumb decisions over and over again. And the ending.. I like that Freddy eventually broke up with LD. That was predictable but had to happen. But I did not like that Doodles and her ended up in a romantic relationship?! If anything, it totally should have been with Vi, her “older” friend who she was becoming close with. I felt way more romantic chemistry there. Don’t get me wrong, I love Doodle and Freddy together .. but as best friends.
