Debt by Nina G. Jones

This didn’t end up being anything like I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a story about a woman named Mia who hires someone to fulfill her rape fantasy and then he like becomes obsessed with her. That’s what the description sounded like to me. But pretty early on we learn that’s not what it’s about at all. It’s about revenge.

Even so, I kept reading but my heart just wasn’t in it. It’s not a bad story and has all the elements to prove to be really interesting in a dark a twisted way. But frankly it moved along at a pace slower then molasses. So many times I thought about DNFing it. But I was curious enough to find out what would happen in the end. So I stuck it out.

Tax was an interesting character. He’s definitely cray-cray but not they craziest guy I’ve ever read. And I can do crazy. Sometimes I even fall hard the psycho crazy guys. I don’t think I’d classify him as a psychopath like he calls himself though. He doesn’t fit the definition of a psychopath. Psychopaths are born not made (sociopaths are made). But I don’t even think he would be classified as a sociopath either. He has too many emotions to be classified as either of those. He has remorse and feels sorry for at least some of his actions (which neither of these would feel in the least). So no, I don’t think he would be classified as either of those. But he’s definitely damaged to a dangerous degree.

Mia was…meh. I didn’t love her character. She’s very weak and pliant and doesn’t seem to have any kind of spine. I get that she likes pain with sex and all, but I don’t get her falling in love with Tax. It wasn’t believable to me. I totally could see her and Tax’s cock having a long term relationship. She’s obsessed with his most perfect cock (which, I’ll admit, did sound pretty fucking perfect). But Tax? I didn’t see the connection with him as a person.

Jude was the fucking crazy sociopath if there ever was one. And as crazy as it sounds, I’m pretty sure she was “in love” with her brother in unhealthy ways (although this isn’t outright admitted). I felt bad for what happened to her but still, that bitch was nutso.

The plot was pretty predictable and it took FOREVER to move forward. This book was way too long. So much time was spent on internal dialog and struggles about what the mystery is and why Tax can’t tell her and blah blah blah. At about 250 pages it seemed like it would’ve been a good time to just let the truth rip and finish out the book. But it continued…on…and on…and on. Until finally it did finish pretty much exactly how I expected it to from early on. Bummer predictable.

So basically it was predictable and slow. The sex was hot but that was about all it had going for it. The plot had potential, but it only would’ve succeeded if it had been tightened up and told at a better pace.
