The Favorites
by Layne Fargo
The Favorites pulled me out of a book slump, but I’m still left with mixed feelings. The documentary-style format gave it a unique, behind-the-scenes intensity that made the world of cutthroat ice dancing feel real and raw. It was juicy, messy, and captivating.
That said, something was missing. The back & forth between Heath and Kat was dizzying. The drama was there, the longing was there, but the emotional connection? Not so much. And the ending left me especially conflicted. Kat was so ambitious, so driven — it felt untrue to her character that she would settle for something so…ordinary?
Overall, a bold and compelling concept that delivered on the drama, but lacked the emotional depth I craved.
