A Ferry of Bones & Gold by Hailey Turner
4.0

Greed wasn’t rational, especially when it came to power.

A Ferry of Boned & Gold is a very interesting book featuring murder, paranormal creatures, gods/goddesses, ex-military MC, and a gay romantic subplot! It was entertaining, engaging, and a great start to the series.

Patrick, our MC, used to be in the military. His knowledge and experiences come up often as the book progresses, so it feels realistic (though I can’t really say since I’ve never been in the military). However, three (3) years ago he was severely injured and thus left the military for a safer line of work consisting of being assigned cases to solve like a detective. This allows him to travel, especially with the newest case he has been assigned to, but also isn’t as safe as he would hope since the immortals (gods/goddesses) have their hands all over it. Patrick can’t stand them, and now he has to maybe work with them?

This book mostly follows Patrick as he tried to keep a potential victim safe, is paired up with a man he had a hard time controlling his desire for, and as he tries to stop this disaster from occurring. Facing his past and saving the world is a lot harder than you might expect.

He’d learned over the years that demons had ingrained stalker tendencies and would never understand the concept of personal space.

I really like the characters so far! Patrick is entertaining, independent, snarky, and also has a I-don’t-care attitude. He is very smart, possibly an alcoholic, powerful even though he lost some of his magic, and honest. In this book, he definitely felt angry and hopeless a lot, which I could feel through the pages. He has gone through a bit of character growth, and I can’t wait to see what happens to him next!

I want to know more about Jono as well. While he is in the book a lot and plays a large part, I still feel like I don’t know him. He was sad and yearning for a pack to call family, but he also didn’t seem to fight for anything even though he himself said at one point that ‘you don’t get to keep what you don’t fight for’. He can be protective and passionate, but who is he really? What is his past? What are his secrets? I hope we get more from him in the next book!

The side characters are also interesting, though there is a lot of them. I especially want to get to know a few who were mentioned at the end of this book. I anticipate a lot of trouble and battles and snarky comments when they enter the picture! I feel like we will also see another side of both Patrick and Jono if they show up in the next book.

Patrick stopped staring at his phone in favor of staring at Jono, idly wondering if Jono’s muscle definition was as hard as it looked and if he could maybe check using his tongue. For scientific reasons, of course.

The romance isn’t quite a romance yet. It’s a lot of sexual tension and lust, as well as a gradual building of trust and affection. Neither character claims to love the other, but I still enjoy their time spent together. I do hope their relationship evolves, but at this moment, I am content with what they have so far.

Overall, this was a great introduction to the series (other than a lot of info dumps in the beginning) and I enjoyed it a lot! I definitely recommend reading this book if it interests you.
