This was my second read from Downing, and most definitely the last. Writing morally bad characters and trying to make the reader like them is her style, but it doesn't work. We know from the get go the husband at least helped with the killing of one woman, and already searching for the next victim, but somehow the fact that the wife tortured those women are a whole other league. 
So killing is OK, but torturing the victim before murder is bad. Gotcha.
