Possession by A.S. Byatt

This book exceeded expectations. It is a period love story and mystery with two sets of lovers and two time periods. It jumps back and forth in time. It is filled with complex literary references of epic poems, metaphors about gender roles, and analysis of identity and purpose. References to literature written by long dead greats challenges the reader and I occasionally struggled to follow along (which is why I would give this 4.5 and not 5 stars) and fully understand the literary references, but the mystery tethers you to the tale and renders you incapable of stopping until you know and understand the authors secrets (all of the authors). This story is sort of beyond description and must be experienced first hand. I highly recommend to any lover of epic romances and period tales with a bit of mystery. This story has a five star ending filled with dramatic revelations and quiet beauty. I simply loved this book.
