New Waves

I really enjoyed this book. The setup is so good, with two excellent characters who are an even better pair for the reader. I loved how individual they each are, in contrast to the blurry background (predominantly white and male) characters, whereas the situation is so often the inverse. The settings are rich as well, and the embedded science fiction stories are a pleasure. The book is also really funny at times.
I had a few minor qualms - I wished it had been more focused on the earlier components of the story - at times it felt a little overstuffed, as if the author felt they had to fit everything in this book. I didn't need the subplot about the writer in New York and the challenges of publishing - that felt like a story that is so frequently told, as opposed to the other stories here. Sometimes things felt a little too on-the-nose, but every time I thought about real-world equivalent events, I realized the book's situation felt pretty reflective of reality, sad as that can be.
