wow. for the first time in years, and i mean years, i devoured a book, start to finish, in one sitting. for me, that takes it up to the 4.75 rating - not everything here worked for me, but i cannot deny the hold it had on me even so. it is darkly addictive.
what makes a person evil? that is the question toyed with here, all bloodthirsty and playful. a woman who kills and maims just to feel something chathes up against a world with a different, incompatible evil - one arbitrarily, in a way, deemed acceptable - baked into its core. i found the final act of this book gave way to a slightly jarring tone shift, with dialogue that felt a little too much like it were mimicking ‘cool’ slasher movie moments all of a sudden, but at its heart this was still a juicy read. (though, i feel obliged to say, one only to recommend to those with strong stomachs).
