Counselor Ayres' Memorial by Machado de Assis

3.0

A novel that discusses love, aging, and youth against a backdrop of Brazilian politics from an elegant old man's eyes. In Ayres' old age, the reader is taught a certain wisdom in this almost "slice of life" story. There is a romanticism of the protagonist that heightens the themes of the novel and makes for some elegant words.
