BOOK REVIEW
"Humiliated and Insulted" or "The Insulted and Injured" (Garnett Translation) by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Constance Garnett Translation
"Humiliated and Insulted" is the third complete novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, first serialized and published by the Vremya literary magazine in the year 1861. Divided into two plots, This novel first follows the story of Ivan Petrovich or known more by his nickname Vanya, a young novelist who spectates the constant tie of Alyosha between Natasha, a near-poor young girl his age whom Alyosha plans on marrying and Katerina, a rich princess whom Alyosha is betrothed with by his deceitful father Prince Valkovsky. Valkovsky is the principal antagonist of this novel, often ridiculing rather than giving constructive criticisms on Vanya's novel in every chance he gets.
The second (and shorter) plot of this book is Vanya's rescuing of a poor, abused and dispossessed teenage girl Nellie, real name Elena, both Vanya and Nellie live in the former's apartment for some time throughout the rest of the latter half of the second plot of the novel.
"Humiliated and Insulted" derives from the titular plot, of the derision of the characters in their respective fields of interest, Vanya in Literature, Alyosha in Indulgence, Natasha in her poverty and Nellie in her dispossessed nature. This novel serves like a mirroring to Dostoevsky's first novel "Poor Folk", partly retold in indirect fashion throughout the duration of this book.
MY THOUGHTS:
Writing the blurb and synopsis for this book felt already tiring but writing my review for this book feels even more draining. This book is, in my humble opinion, Dostoevsky's most emotionally destructive novel. This novel is so tragic on so many levels the characters never really asked to be in these situations.
This novel nearly made me cry in the end when Natasha passed away in Vanya's sight. Vanya couldn't really do anything but weep. It is so sad! Dostoevsky wrote such a melancholic piece, I could state and state again that this novel was emotional.
I could've taken this novel slowly, but I decided to read it fast-paced, so I probably missed out on many other plots and subliminal messages.
Vanya is the mirroring of Dostoevsky's pre-Siberian self. The man was hopeful in paying of his debts by writing "Poor Folk", which I actually read nearly 2 months past. Reading this novel felt so like my experience of reading Dostoevsky again.
I couldn't go on because of the tragedy written down in words, I couldn't express my gratitude sooner to Dostoevsky for writing a novel for the ages. Though it is underrated, This novel sticked with me more than "The Village of Stepanchikovo", the other Dostoevsky novel I read last August.
