If you want queer Māori cyberpunk fungal horror, this is it.
I think I enjoyed the theoretical idea more than the execution on this one. There's a lot of action, things are fast-paced, and a lot of worldbuilding is set up very quickly and, to be honest, they kind of lost be around the 70% mark in terms of what exactly is going on and why. The end feels like a duology that needs to be carried forward, but I would have liked a more traditional trilogy in this case to set up the world and magic system with a slower-paced first book and then dive into the action setpieces because A LOT happens very quickly and there just isn't enough time and space to appreciate the body horror or the action sequences before we jump perspective or are forced to move on.
