I don't usually read "popular authors" like Hannah. I'm really glad I took a chance on this book though. It was really special. Obviously it gathered a plethora of themes and ideas we associate with Vietnam veterans, but with the unique perspective of the nurses' experiences. I thought it was beautifully and powerfully written - a good reflection for us all. Hannah is an expert storyteller and clearly thought about how to tell Franky's story in ways that evoke emotion and build compassion for one another. I was really impressed by the ways in which she built suspense, allowed us to grow attached to characters, and there were a few moments where humor shined through. I especially appreciated Hannah's recommended reading list at the end so if you want to learn more you can.
