White Oleander
by Janet Fitch
Content warning: emotional abuse
The first time around, I read this in 2003 and I was immediately obsessed. This book has grown with me, being a comforting familiar presence throughout the ups and downs in my own life. Fitch created something spectacular with this. The movie is a lovely illustration of it, though the director made Ingrid redeemable and human, which I think was a mistake; the book had her utterly unrepentant, which was so much more interesting.
