ptreick 's review for:

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

Well, I did it. I finished this book.

I picked it up several years ago before seeing Hamilton the musical and ended up overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it, but I did the #HamiltonPenguinReadAlong through July and August, and it was quite manageable. And maybe I am capable of reading biographies!

I already knew quite a lot about Hamilton's life from the musical, random historical notes, and reading Dear Eliza, but there was quite a bit here to me that was new.

More interesting to me was the saga of the Founding Fathers and their squabbles and infighting, and the fact that the United States almost didn't happen at several points. I'm not sure why my understanding of American history has been limited to stories of success and striving, but Chernow presents a good overview of a young country hanging on by the thinnest of threads at times, and more often than not, that thread involved Alexander Hamilton.
