The Effective Manager
by Mark Horstman
This is an absolutely brilliant, no-nonsense and highly practical book on the day-to-day management of a team.
I have listened to Manager Tools podcast for some time now, and while I am not in a line management role myself, the instructions on running meetings, managing projects and just generally guiding people to be their best selves have been invaluable. So I bought this book partly to support their effort, partly so that I would have something tangible.
The book contains no fluff, it is just step-by-step instructions on how to lead a team in an efficient and sustainable manner. Especially the parts on having one-on-ones and giving feedback are seriously substantial, but towards the latter parts (coaching and delegation) the meat starts to run out. Also, due to cultural and legal differences, you must be quite critical when applying the teachings in, for example, Northern European context.
Nevertheless, I highly recommend The Effective Manager for anyone, whose job entails leading people.
