Confessions by Kanae Minato

5.0

my first 5 star of the year!
this short book packs a big punch.

a japanese thriller novel set in a school? what more could i ask for?!

the construction of this book was incredible. subtle but important twists throughout. and all timed to perfection. the book premise seems simple from the information on the front of the book but it's much more complicated than that.

it starts with a farewell speech from a class teacher. she goes through her life story, into why she is leaving the school and goes deeper into how her young daughter really died (and its not the accidental drowning that the police concluded but murder.)

ps this is not technically a spoiler as its on the back cover.

i loved the exploration of why people do what they do. the characters are so complex.

anyway, i couldn't recommend this higher. its one of those books that its best to say less and have the people who read it discover the brilliance of it for themselves.
