Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood
4.0
no spoilers 🧸
what to say about this book…. honestly i’m so conflicted lmao. my brain hurts too much rn for complete sentences tho, so let’s do bullet points.
✨ THE GOOD ✨
• her writing style and how she will interject a scene w a very long tangent and then loop it back
• literally was HILARIOUS to read
• i lovee levi he felt so much and i wanted him to be as affectionate as he was online (unfortunately he wasn’t and i’ll get to that)
• the emphasis on women in stem and feminism ofc
• an unexpected emphasis on vitality and social media pen names
• the side romance in the office tehe
✨ THE BAD ✨
• a little predictable but it’s a romcom what can you expect
• i’m sorry but bee’s character was kinda annoying at times. that’s the problem w a grumpy sunshine, sometimes the ☀️ one can be a little too sunshiney and “ooh quirky tehe” which ew. (this did get fixed sometimes bc she would yell at people and it’d be nice to see her defend herself, but she could be really clumsy or awkward and oof it was cringey)
• they didn’t elaborate about Levi’s family pretty much at all. it was a big problem they needed to fix.
✨ THE MORE PROMINENT BAD, BUT NOT QUITE UGLY✨
• the over sexualization of the male character ofc which unfortunately ali does a lot. as a former wattpad writer ig it’s a little expected (not to stereotype but you know …) and if it was dual pov then i’m sure it would be reciprocated for the heroine. however, i just didn’t need to be reminded 5729 times that levi was really tall. got the message.
• the romance didn’t feel fleshed out at ALL which is so sad bc Ali is usually so good at tension and romance. but this book was weird bc it evolved into a romance that one character was really feeling but the other thought it was a friends w benefits situation. then that character realized the real feelings, went back to apologize, and we got to see NOTHING for the rest of the book about their romance. they didn’t even kiss or anything when the character came back. so i was like whaaa-
✨ THE UGLY ✨
THE MISCOMMUNICATION LOVES HAVE A FRIGGIN CONVERSATION
tbh the only reason this bumped to a four star book is bc it really was very funny and joyful to read. but i just didn’t appreciate their relationship as much as i wanted to, so :’(.
TRIGGERS
misogyny, gun violence and threats, explicit sex, cheating, death and abandonment.
