Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon

4.0

Enjoyable, in the way that heartbreaking books can be enjoyable. I think we need more books that showcase vulnerability and hurt and how it shows up in Black men. How body image hurts them too. I don’t personally hear a lot of Black men discussing their bodies and the hurt that they carry within them. Their shame and their disappointment in those that they love and how that ties in with every single thing else that they carry. This book was refreshing. I love hearing people admit their mistakes as much as I enjoy hearing their triumphs. Kiese had so many of both and I know I couldn’t be that raw myself. It was inspiring.
