I was kind of annoyed by the book and didn't understand why the painting and the secret was such a big deal. I think it intended to be more moving than it actually was for me, and so maybe I was annoyed at the "try hard nature". I do think it captured realistic aspects of the adolescent mind (though, while believable, also gave an extra annoying twinge).
I didn't dislike the book though, despite not having much positive to say about it.
