I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

5.0

If you watched an episode or 2 of iCarly before, I'm sure you noticed this funny and sarcastic little girl, Sam, played by Jennette McCurdy. Her character was so well-loved that a spin-off was made for her and Cat, played by Ariana Grande, another favorite character from another Nickelodeon series, Victorious.

This is Jennette's memoir and is getting popular now among the book community. Why? It's her story about her abusive and dying mother and her horrifying experiences as a little girl breaking into show business. Experiences that led her to think she's incapable of doing anything without her mother, that she has to meet her mother's target weight for her so she can be called a good daughter, and that her main goal and purpose in life is to please her mother. This constant brainwashing and manipulating tactics from her own mom seriously distorted how she viewed other people, her relationships, and her own self.

Sad and heartbreaking. But it's sooo good and well-written. Even the audiobook is good because Jennette herself is the narrator. It feels like she's just talking to you.

An inspiring story of resilience and independence. Highly recommended!
