Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

5.0

a piece of japanese literature has captured my heart and soul once again. after reading and adoring sweet bean paste by durian sukegawa I had an inkling that japanese fiction could be one of my favourite areas of the book world. and after reading this one I am convinced. give me all your japanese literature recommendations please!

the story is about time travel. but it's done in a very unique way. it is set in a small, simple cafe in japan. the story features different characters coming to the cafe to travel back to a part of their past that they feel a need to go back to. this is not time travelling for just the sake of it or because its a cool thing to do, these characters have a genuine longing to do this.

this is done by sitting on a chair in the cafe and being served a cup of coffee. they are able to go back to a time in their life when they were in the cafe but they must return to the present before it gets cold otherwise there will be repercussions. there are also many other important rules that must be followed.

this is all I'll say due to not wanting to give any of this small book away. but just know that you will likely be deeply moved by this book. each of the stories of the four characters who visit the past captured my imagination.

onto my next japanese text!
